Ei tarpeeksi monta - Only few

Tanssi on luonteeltaan sosiaalista - kohdataan toisia, tanssitaan yhdessä! '

The time has flown recently, and I just noticed, that there are many readers who have visited the blog during these past two weeks... now the stories form the toddlers´ dance lessons continue....

Sometimes it happens that the size of toddlers dance class is only four to  six adult and child pairs, and sometimes there are just two participants.  These groups of just handful of adults and children usually are closed and the partisipants are advised to take part in the classes with more dancers, and that is the right thing to do.
If there are only, let´s say three adult and child pairs, it means that this kind of group has difficulties to become and functions as a group.  The children usually don´t learn from each other easily.  The circles and all kinds of formations are too small for the children to comprehend.  If someone becomes sick or is absent otherwise ( very common with the little ones and their families), the group keeps shrinking.  The dance room seems too large and spacious, the teacher can give too much attention to the dancers. There is no opportunity to make experiments on their own.

But if there are four to five active adult and child dancing pairs, the group might work just fine.  The noise level is low, children don´t bump into each other, the teacher has time for everyone, but there is possible to dance alone too.  The circle is big enough and there are enough children to make new friends.

Dance is social, let´s meet each other, let´s dance together!

Kuinka monta? How many?

Me opettajatkin mietimme tätä kysymystä paljon.

Seuraavassa blogissa sitten näkökulmia taaperotanssin pieniin ryhmiin....

How many toddlers can dance at the same dance lesson? This is something parents surely think, when they find out browsing the internet pages of a dance school´s schedules, that the group they were going to partcipate is full. Or that the other suitable group is not beginning due to the lack of participants.
How  many is too many or too few at the toddlers´dance lesson?

That is something we teachers also think a lot. If there are too many people attending the dance lesson, the children find the situtation difficult, there is just too many different people around.  Becoming a group is challenging, the children  can´t remember their dance friends, and it can be very uncomfortable to hold hands in a circle ( even in the spring time), or sitting close next to a dance friend.  The teacher doesn´t have time to give attention everyone sufficiently.  The teacher remains as a distant figure for the children through out the year.

The most difficult thing is the rise of sound level during the lesson.  Parents and children communicate and if there are too many voices the sound level just rises too much up.  This creates undesired stress for the children and for the adults. Even the teacher might  get edgy, if she has to raise her own voice giving directions or having to ask dancers to lower their speaking voices frequently.
It is suitable and appropriate that everyone is able to hear the music and even the words, for example in a childrens´song.  One is allowed to talk, cheer, laugh and giggle ( even yell) in the free-moving parts of the class.  Then there are moments when one is hoped to be very calm and even silent, for example if we lissten to the sounds in the music or relax..

The ideal size of a toddlers´s dance group is between 10-12, and even couple more, child- adult pairs, if the there is enough space. The groups works well even if some of the dancers are away sometimes.

In the next blog I´ll share my views about groups with only  few dancers...

Kesäinen kävely - Summer walk

Löysin tällaisen kesäisen kuvan, jonka nimi on" Summer walk", eli kesäinen kävely.

I found this picture called "the Summer walk".  These steady steps and finely waving hands ( helping balancing)  on the side brought all the dancing toddlers and their dancing back to my mind.

The ability to walk has certainly improved ( steady well balanced steps) among my last year´s little pupils, and most of them can most certainly run by now.  And some of my little students who danced in their parents` laps last spring can dance by their own feet this comign  autumn.

Summer is wonderful time for children ( and for their parents), not having to wear heavy boots.  One can move with light steps wearing only sandals or "running shoes" and even with bare feet.
Walking on bare feet gives children  many sensory perceptions and develops their balance.  Many children  also try to stand on the ball of his or hers foot by nature . It is useful for the children to walk on many different platforms or bases for example on the grass, on the sand, on the little rocks etc. as long as the enviroment is safe.  It would be nice to hear what kind of walking places you have found with your children during the summer?

There is still vacation left before the dance lessons begin -  I wish all the children and their parents  great walks!

Hyvää kesää! Have a nice summer!

Maija Paavilainen.

Blogi siirtyy kesätauolle, ja palaa taas elokuussa 2012.

Have a nice summer!  the blogger  takes a pause and will continue writing in August 2012.

näyttämöllä - on stage

Taaperoiden tanssikevät on tullut päätökseen, ja tanssivuosi päättyi esitykseen näyttämöllä, kuten muidenkin tanssikoulujen oppilaiden.

Miksi taaperot esiintyvät, pitääkö heidän esiintyä, eivätkö he ole aivan liian nuoria esiintyään?

Pakko on huono lähtökohta esiintymiselle.

The dance year has come to  the end, as as for toddler´s dance class, it ended on stage along other (older) dancers.

Why do the toddler aged children  perform on stage?  Should they perform? Aren´t they too young to perform?

These are the questions I´m asked, and these are the same guestions that I ask myself every spring before the toddler´s class takes the stage.  There are teachers and parents who find that performing on stage is out of the question for  toddler aged children. I can agree with this opinion, because a part of me thinks that way too.

Toddler´s dance class is for the child and adul, and each class should offer goals and experiences for both of them.  In my opinion performing gives a goal for the adult, something that helps him or her to keep coming to the class every week and something that makes him or her to feel as a part of a group that is taking a journey together towards the performance. For some oh the adults performing on stage  with his or her child  can be a  first time dancing  on stage.  The experience can be  very rewarding and might be a starting point for something new in his or her life.

If performing feels kind of hard and strange, then it is better no to participate.  Must is a bad starting point for performing.

1-2 year old child is too young to understand the concept of performing, but if the dance performance is danced in a same relaxed feeling than any other dance in the regular dance class, then performing hardly can hurt any of the children.  If the performance is being practiced with a too high quality goal, then the children can sense the higher stress level of the adults, and the children can find the moment of performing uncomfortably and stressful.  I do not recommend this latter approach.
Should the toddlers perform? Abslolutely not.  Should they not to perform? Absolutely no, again.
Each group can make a decision with their teacher whether to perform this year or not.
I hope my thoughts can help in the decision making.

maalataan - painting

 Aikaisemmin lupailin, että kerron lisää höyhen- harjoituksista taaperoiden tanssitunnilla;

I promised earlier that I would tell more about exercises with feathers in the dance lesson;

The objects in the pictures above slightly resemble each other, the children at least seem to think that it is possible to paint with a brush or with a feather.  We painted the floor, drew lines on the floor... how does it feel to paint with a light feather?

When the" floor work"  went well, we started to draw lines in the air, making curves with feather in hand, flying lines in the air.  Painting a punctutation mark could have been the next step.

The most pleasent moment prpbably was  when the adults took the feathers in their hands, and painted their children from the head to the toes.  One of the goals in the toddler´s dance class is that a child would understand and pervceive his or hers body image , and this kind of painting dance can help the young children to do that.

If one paints body parts that are not covered with dance clothes for example forehead, hands, palms and soles of the feet, how comfortable that feels!  Makes the children tickle a little bit and smile plenty!

vierailulla - visiting

pieniä helmiä - little pearls

I´ sorry there has been a pause in my writings. I visited another type of moving:

There are little pearls in the picture, little figure skaters who play pearls in the Ice show called Little Mermaid  by the Espoon jäätaiturit.  I was a visitor, a director in the Ice show,  and I was able to see how the young beginners ( the youngest chidlren were 2-3 years old) did.  There are no adult- children lessons it the figure skating, but they do have many teachers in the beginners class. For some of the beginners the class are adult-child classes because there needs to be one adult who keeps the child up on the ice at first.

In the beginning  figure skating is more challenging than dancing:  one must be able to move on the slippery base with skates skates before one can do anything "fancy".  But the childten  do well as you can see in the picture ( the teachers can´tbe seen in this picture but actually there were 4-5 adults helping the little performers...)
