The " advanced" toddlers, 2-3-years old performed a dance called " The Little Gingerbreads Cookies " on stage at a dance school´s annual christmas performance last December. The adults were bakers and the children ginger bread cookies. It was an ambitious and lengthy, almost four minutes, choreography. I felt the challenge with the group while we were practising. The children got tired of practising, loosing their energy instead of gaining it. I believe the children sensed the pressure - the must learn this- from us, the adults. Any kind of pressure is of course unwelcomed at the normal toddlers's´ dance class.
The 2-3- years old children can do plenty, move skillfully and keep up with the rhytm. The adults were also good and musical dancers in this group, so I got carried away and created a choreograpghy with little bit of plot even. I kept thinking how to practise a dance perfromance with the toddlers through out the rehearsing process. I didn´t find all the answers yet, but I do know that it would be helpful if the adults could learn the choreography first and then dance it with the children.
The performance was a hit, although we experienced last minute surprises, but with young dancers one must be prepared for everything. I have a feeling this dance will be on stage again. My warmest thanks to all the wonderful bakers and their gingerbread cookies... my special thanks for the pictures!
