Joulukausi alkaa - the Holiday Season is here

JOULUTEATTERI: PÄHKINÄNSÄRKIJÄSytkyt: Pähkinäsärkijä kansallisteatteri

http://www.kansallisteatteri.fi/esitykset/jouluteatteri-pahkinansarkija/

The  official holiday season began last week when all the dance groups started to learn their christmas dances at the dance lessons.  The toddlers are preparing  a reindeer dance with hula hoops. "Twinkle twinkle little star" is annual season dance. Children can practise motor skills with  finger movements , and the stars can swing and sway  from one side to the other finding their balance.   Also the concepts up and down are included in the Twinkle...

The 3-4years old dancers are pracising a Winter Elf dance accompanied by the Sugar Plum Fairy variation from the Nutcracker ballet ( Tchaikovsky).  The winter elf´-dancers have glittering capes and they walk silently in a circle, they also create macigal tunnels by themselves and they spin around and make beautiful turns their capes flowing in the air.  The children seem to enjoy the wonderful music and play their part as a macig snow fairies.

The picture above is from a Puppet Theatre performance  by Sytkyt playing in the National Theatre in Helsinki. One of my 3-years old dancer saw the performance with his mother, and they both liked it very much. The recommended age for audience is 3-8 years old. Read more in the link above.

Let´s embrace this Holiday season!

Pallo + Liike = Tanssi? Ball + Movement = Dance ?

Jos haluatte kurkistaa vielä China Daily-sivulta löytämäni artikkelin pallon monista mahdollisuuksista, niin googlatkaa  The art of balance and fun

During this past fall we´ve danced with balls at the toddlers´ dance lessons. I dared to bring in the balls for the first time. I always anticipated  that a chaos would take over once the children got hold of the balls. I also regarded  that a ball and dance  would not work together. But I was wrong.
There has not been a slightest sign of a chaos during lessons.  ´The children have found ball rolling and bowling assigments very interesting as well as balancing on top of the ball or hiding the ball with diffrent body parts.
The most challenging part for me was to plan how to practise the kicking -movement in a dance like way?  To kick a ball is very good  over all coordination movement, eye and foot work together and finding balance on one foot while the other one is doing the kick is very demanding for the youngest ones. In addition to this, kicking a ball is truly fun, so I knew I couldn´t leave that movement out of our ball routines.
After some thinking and experimenting we now have a two-part ball dance accompanied by percussions played by myself, The parts are kicking the ball to the other side of a dance room and carrying the ball in different positions back to the starting point. A different percussion is played when  movements change.  It might sound a little bit confusing when described with words, but let me assure you the ball dance looks good, and it feels even better!
( and this dance can be danced outside as well...)

And if you like to see a picture and a article what really fun kids can do with a ball
google the words : The art of balance and fun , you´ll get the China Daily page...

Laterna magica

Laterna magica : Henrik Martin Bångs

Viime yönä siirrettiin kelloja talviaikaan.  Edessä on jälleen pitkä pimeän jakso.  Selatessani lehtiä huomasin  artikkelin, joka sai minut muistamaan Mira Caseliuksen valotaideteoksen "I wish I was" josta kirjoitin viime vuonna.
Tanssi tuo valoa pimeyteen monella tapaa!

The winter time began last night.  The long dark months are ahead of us again.  I found this article, the link below, and it made me remember the light installation by  Mira Caselius  "I wish I was" that I wrote about last winter.  Apparently artist Caselius is not the only artist inspired by dance. The interior designers find dance very inspiring  as well, creating lamps with dance theme.  One can read the article by Swedish Sköna Hem introducing these wonderful artworks.
Dance brings light into darkness in many ways!

Lisää esityksiä pienille - More performances for the little ones

kuva: Ilpo Mikkonen

A Puppet Theatre Poiju, situated in Helsinki, offers many performances for the young children.  The picture above is from a performance called The Christmas of a Hedgehog which is for  age groups 1-10 years old children.  The performance season is from the 19th of November until 18the of December, and the performances are in different places through out Helsinki area. Read more, the link above.

p.s It is quite a coincidence, that hedgehod-theme, since we have danced  hedgehog dance with the 3-4-years old dancers during the last weeks.

Tavoitteena keskittynyt tunnelma - Aiming towards concentration

Tästä on hyvä jatkaa!
Rauhallista ja aurinkoista viikonloppua toivottaen!

The parents of the three years old dancers finally got inside to take a look at their children`s dancing. Last week was the open oors-week at the dance school.  It often happens during the open doors - lessons that children keep running to their parents between different dances, the teacher might seem to be left alone standing and waiting for the children to attend and the overall picture of class might seem unorganized by the parents` point of view. And it the worst thing is, that the picture is usually totally untrue. This year I tried to avoid this kind of scenario from happening by kindly asking the parents and other audience to keep quiet and stay concentrated on the children.

From the very first dance lesson I teach children to lissten to the instructions, give other dance friends so called dance piece, meaning not to stand too close to their friends, not to push their friends or  order them around. I also teach them to focus on their own  moving, to perceive the space, lissten to the music and wait for their own turn if necessesary. These so called "How to behave in a dance class" skills help the children, and enable the learning of actual dance and movement skills as well as  concentrating skills.
The flow of learning is possible.

Last week we put togeter the things the children have learned so far and the supportinf audience of parents and the  results were plenty: each group concentrated well and did their best during the class!
The children acted natural, as did the teacher, and the parents had a real picture of their childrens dance lesson. The most important were the moments of deep concentration by the children.
An undisturbed and safe enviroment is needed, if the children are required to concentrate.
Last week  that atmosphere was achieved, even the audience present It is a good point to continue!
Have a peacefu and sunny weekend!

Kontataan - Let´s crawl !

Lapsen kontatessa hänellä kehittyy vuoroliike, eli kehon eri puolet toimivat vuorotellen.

In most of the toddlers´ dance lessons we crawl. It can be quite unpleasant for us, the adults, and our knees rarely like it.  But it is useful to keep in mind how important the skill of crawling is for young babies and children.  When a child is crawling, she or he is developing so called alternating movement, meaning the body sides work together creating a movement.  During the alternating movements the different sides of brains work at the same time, and this brain development  is important in other learning as well.
The ability to alternate one´s movements is important also in  climbing and many other movements.

The adults should be ready to crawl, roll and move in all kinds of ways down on the floor.  Wear clothes that are comfortable.  Adults are the moving examples for their children, in crawling as well.
Let´s try to make it fun for all!

Down below there is an artist´s view about a crawling child.

Pian pian! Soon soon!

Yllä oleva kuva saattaa tuoda mieleen monelle tanssikoululaisen vanhemmalle tutun tunteen.

Onneksi avoimien ovien tunti on ihan pian! Tervetuloa!

This picture might make parents feel the same way as they might feel at the door of a  dance room when they are bringing their little dancers to the dance school.  The teacher takes the children in and shuts the door in front of the parents.  The autumn term is well on its way and still the parents are left outside.  This might irritate some parents and understandably so.
Why do dance teachers act this way?
First shortly: There are child-adult dance groups in many dance schools today. So if parents feel that their child is too young to stay without them in a group teaching enviroment,  I warmly suggest to take part in the child-adult classes.
But if parents have chosen to put their child in a dance class for 3-4years old children, then it would wise to discuss the fact that hte child is going to be left in the group without their parents, so that the situation won´t come as a surprise for the child.

It is for the children`s best interest that they get to now their teacher little by little and begin to trust her to be the secure adult in the learning situation. Children concentrate and  look at their teacher and lissten  to her instructions.   The new situation takes time, children also  learn  about a new dance enviroment and get to know other children,if their concentration is not divided between many objects.
The same applies for the teacher.  She can give her undivided attention to the children, observe the children and begin to teach them . In all simplicity the closed doors  give an oppurtunity to create a peaceful and safe learning situation for the new young dancers.

But it is imperative, that parents stay outside the dance room door, since children might want to check that their mommies or daddies truly are waiting for them.

The opend doors-lesson will be held as soon as the children are comfortably in the dance class situation and they have learned the first dances.  It is really important for the children to be able to show their parents what they have learned, and it is equally important for the parents to see what their children have learned and how the teacher is teaching their children.
Fortunatuly the open doors - class is very soon! Welcome"
