Maapallo, Saturnus ja ? Globe, Saturn and?

Taaperotanssin yksi osa on erilaisiin liikuntavälineisiin tutustuminen.
Tähän on tartuttava!

One part of Toddlers´ Dance is learning about different exercise tools and how to handle them. Hula hoops are really popular with little children. The hoops are large but light. A child is able to handle a big object on his or her own. That creates a sense of independency for the children, not to mention the joy they are having with the hoops.

During my teaching years I´ve seen countless ways how to play and dance with the hoops. But few weeks ago  a little boy age almost three spoke out his significant observation. He said "globe" to his mother who crossed two hoops and the little boy stepped in and out of the  globe. Then the mother crossed the hoops differently and the boy just said "Saturn" and danced in the Saturn.  Children tell the truth, it is a saying, but sometimes we learn new insights from children and their creative way of combining things and observations.
This little boy opened a window for us to see the way  integrated learning works.  I was only sorry not to have a model of Saturn in our dance class or a globe that children could have taken a look and explored after our dance lesson.  Other children could have made the same observations  than this boy  already had made by combining knowledge he had learned earlier with this new element - hoops.
There is so much talk about the possibilities of  integrated, holistic learning. Here I was introduced to one example of it. Let´s seize it!

p.s It is not only the children who come up with  creative solutions. In the picture above there is one other new model for hoops created by one dancing father. He just didn´t invent a name for it. If you or your child finds a name for this hoop  statue, please let me know!

Tanssi vai puhetunti? Dance or speech class?

Pistekirjoituksella:tanssitaan
braille letters: tanssitaan

http://yle.fi/uutiset/puhumattomat_kolmevuotiaat_uusi_ilmio__some_varastaa_vanhempien_ajan/8356936

I noticied  this article above : How children do not learn to speak as young as they used to learn because of  the increasing use of social media by their parents. After reading it I´ve been worried but also glad that there is at least one moment and one place where cell phones and pads  are not dominating the situation - in a toddlers´ dance lesson.   The basis of all art lessons is concentration, being present at the situation, awareness of self and others.  Actually participating in a dance lesson makes the adults to interact with  their own child - that being one of the goals in toddlers´dance.  It is not necessarily easy to step out from the flood of messages, pictures and information.

The dance lesson for the little ones is not a silent moving lesson.  One speaks there all to the time, speaking out the action, parents teaching their children, teacher guiding the group. I pay attention to the correct use of words and language and I encourage adults to do the same. A little bit surprisingly one could say that dance is one method to help to learn the language. Children  learn easily what words such as up-down mean through their own actions.  Also more difficult concepts such as "beside" and "one after another" can be learned relatively easily by for example moving like a car, adult in the front and child behind.
All the action rhymes are core excersises in small childrens´dance lesson. Little by little first the silent children begin to find the right words, practising out loud and succeeding at the end in their pronunciation ,finding the perfect words.   A perfect action rhyme is accompanied by loud voices making us all content!
The dance class for the  litte ones is both speech and dance lesson!

Kiitos aikuiset!

Summer and all kinds of insects have been our inspiration during our dance lessons even in September. Old classic song "Itsy Bitsy Spider" was the starting point for these series of dances.  I was surprised that children continously are familiar with the song and love to sing and dance to its tune.  We danced the dancers´version of the well known play -song. But I believe everybody liked even more the Webb -dance we created.  It did require adults who are willing to dive into the make believe and finding artistic experience imagenery world. Thank you so much my lovely adult dancers!

One adult-child couple creates a statue that is connected from one body part to each other. Then other couples connect with each other creating a large webb in the middle of the dance room. Half of the adult-child couples are forming the webb and the other half is waiting to see what kind webb there is this time.  When the webb is finished the little spiders try to find ways to go throught the webb by finding little tunnels and holes they can step or crawl through.  This exercise is really based on creative dance and could work as a part of a choreography.  The same exercise can be done with older children who are able to carry themselves and hold still for a while in the webb formation. I warmly recommend this kind of visual and exploring dance exercise.
By bye Spiders!

Tervetuloa! Welcome!

Taas on se odotettu vuodenaika tanssikoulujen syysohjelmassa, että ovet avataan tunneille, ja perheet kutsutaan katsomaan mitä tanssijat juuri tällä hetkellä harjoittelevat.  Vierailin Suomen kansallisoopperan  balettioppilaitoksella jossa pidetään kaksi avoimen ovien viikonloppua http://balettioppilaitos.fi//.
Vauvoille on omaa ohjelmaa!
http://www.ooppera.fi/ohjelmisto/vauvojen_taidetuokio/4511

Tervetuloa - Opettaja odottaa!

It is the time of the  fall season in dance schools, that the doors are open for the dancers´s families to come and see how we are dancing  this year.  The Finnish National opera´s ballet school has two  open doors weekends  http://balettioppilaitos.fi//. and I was able to visit there and see young dancers at work.  It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and the exemplary pedagocigal teaching.
The audience could sense the presense of art.
The Finnish National Ballet´s  repertoire is  favourable for children. We can all remember the Mumin -ballet from last winter, now the The Little Mermaid - ballet is opening and then the traditional christmas season ballet The Nutcracker is next. Even babies are thought.  Take a look at the Art Moment for babies - above link.

The Espoon tanssiopisto has Open house as well this week. It is also quite exciting for teachers. I look forward meeting the families of my dance pupils and I´m happy to hear your thoughts as well!
Welcome - the teacher is waiting!

Tasapainoillaan ! Let´s balance!

Luin alla olevan artikkelin erityisherkistä lapsista, ja heidän kohtaamisestaan.
http://www.meidanperhe.fi/artikkeli/kasvu/kasvatus/erityisherkan_lapsen_4_tunnuspiirretta_ja_nain_toimit_herkkiksen_kanssa Uskon tämän olevan mielenkiintoinen kaikille kasvattajille. Pienten tanssitunneilla saamme kokea, kuinka kaikki lapset tarvitsevat aikaa tottua uusiin ihmisiin ja uusiin ärsykkeisiin.  Joskus joukossa on  erityisherkkiä lapsia, joiden tarpeet vanhempien ja opettajan täytyy ottaa huomioon tanssitunnille osallistumisessa.

Me opettajat yritämme luoda turvallisen ilmapiirin tunneille.

Toinen asia, mitä mietin paljon on yhtäaikaisten ärsykkeiden määrä tunnin eri tilanteissa. Tanssisaleissa on ärsykkeitä jo itsessään esim. maisemaikkunoita tai ilmastoinnin taustasuhinaa.  Yritän karsia myös turhat esineet tilasta, joihin lasten mielenkiinto saattaa kohdistua. Samasta syystä yritän tarkkailla omaa käytöstäni opetustilanteessa, yrittäen rajoittaa esim. pitkiä ohjeenantoja ja seurustelua vanhempien kanssa tunnin aikana.
Me tanssijat itse luomme jo paljon liikettä ja ääntä tilaan.

I read this article about over-sensitive children in Vauva -lehti, the link above. I find it interesting as I´m sure, so  do many parents and teachers.  In the adult and children dance lessons we can experience how little children need time to adjust themselves to new stimulus, new people, sounds and space.  Sometimes there  are these over sensitive children that need even more time and parents´s (and teacher´s) protection and quidance in the dance class situation.

The art teachers like myself, we try to create a safe atmosphere for the children and their parents.  A significant factor  are the routines at the lesson, the order of the excersices, the repetition .  For example we must always do the ending dance even if we are running late in our schedule. Otherwise the lesson stays " hanging in the air" because it didn´t end properly.  Through the regularity children become active partisipants instead of merely observing the situation.

I also think about the amount of different kind of stimulus during the lessons constantly.   In different dance rooms there are large windows with interesting views, air conditioning humming . I try to remove objects that are not necessarily part of the dance lesson.  I also try to give the instructions shortly and avoid unnecessary  talking during the lesson.

We, the dancers create a lot of movements and sounds already.  That is why I´m really sensitive to the  sound level, if it rises too much, I always ask the parents to lower their voices.  For the same reason I rarely use music when we are dancing with different objects for example with balls. Children already have so much to concentrate in, that music might just be too much for the situation. It could ruin the beautiful flow-feeling we are after during the dance classes.
Raising children is balancing and so is teaching dance!

Nalletanssi the Bear dance

 http://www.fono.fi/Dokumentti.aspx?culture=fi&ID=5a62a0dd-d6ee-4a41-8bdc-03758b76562c

We ´ve been dancing the Bear dance with children and adults together these past weeks.  In the dance we practise walking hand in hand in a circle, streching up and down and finding the basic rhytm moving our bodies and clapping as well.  The music is from Risto Järvenpää´s cd called Tatsia ja Janssia. The piece is called Nallet kaupungissa.  One can find the cd in the libraries.  More information about the Nallet kaupungissa see the link above. .

The children remember the Bear dance easily. The biggest challenge is to get the children hold hands with new adults . It is nice if you can play the music at home as well. The children keep the dance alive by doing it at home although at the classes we must proceed to new dances.  At the end of the season we repeat some exercises, especially the favorite ones.
The little bear in the picture is from the Blenheim Palace in England, as the text says is his paw.  The bear looks quite stern, but luckily feels quite soft and is flexible. It is easy to dance with him!
At home the bears and other stuffed animals can take part in the circle and children can dance with them!

Tervetuloa tanssimaan!

Opetuspäivät ti klo.16.30-17.15, ke klo.16.45-17.30 ja to klo.10.00-10.45.
3-4-vuotiaiden aamutunnille torstaisin klo.9.30-10.00 mahtuu myös.
Tervetuloa kokeilemaan!

The cool summer is over, but fortunately the sun finally came out  at the beginning of the dance year.
The adult-child dance lessons have began last week. It was lovely to meet the old stundets who have grown so much during the summer.  I was also delighted to meet new young  students and their parents.  As I told last spring I´now teach in Espoo and my lessons can be found at the following address www.espoontanssiopisto.fi.  and under adult-child dance.  I believe there is information also in English and I know the office can answer all your questions in English.

I also teach lessons age group 3-4-years.
New pupils are still welcomed in all the adult-chld groups, and there is room for 3-4years old children on Thursday morning group 9.30am-10.00am, the time table is above.

Let´s enjoy the warmth and let´s dance bare feet in the dance school and on the grass and on the beach!
