Tanssivat lehdet - Dancing leaves

Take a look at the leaf above and imagine a child age one, two or three years, holding it.  During the last month we´ve been dancing with the autumn leaves at the toddlers´ dance lessons.  It might be a little bit hard to believe that the young ones really dance their own dance with the leaves.  We begin by sitting on the floor holding a leaf in one hand, we wave the leaf  making curves or lines in the air accompanied by beautiful music.  We can also make movements by drawing shapes on the floor with the leaves, what kind of sound can you hear?
We stand up and really begin to move continuing make curves in the air, swinging, letting the leaves lead us to turn around, up and down.  We´ve practised how to drop the leaves and how to "fall" ourselves down to floor after the leaves.  You can only imagine what kind of a movement spectacle  has been going on, when the leaves have fallen and the children have fallen and the adults have fallen  from high up to the floor -  "Nobody believes this without seeing with their own eys" I have thought in my mind when seeing this wonderful sight in front of me.

Falling autumn leaves-dance is creative dance at its best, suitable both children and adults, and the topic is present all around if you just take a look outside.  One mother told me "At the dance lesson we dance with the leaves and continue dancing with them outside, sometimes jumping in a stack of leaves"

Goodbye to autumn leaves for now - welcome christmas season!

Little more about the Carneval of the Animals -
The French television and radio in co-operation with Camera Lucida Productions made a magnificent film version about the Carneval of the Animals.  This programme was aired in the Finnish televison last winter.  The programme is an interesting  and elegant combination of acting, animation and classical music at its best . It is a real Poesie Musicale as the creators of the programme call their award winning production.  More about the programme, pictures and video-

liikuntavälineet - vanne - The hoop

Miksi tanssitunnilla on osuus, missä lapset tutustustuvat eri liikuntavälineiisiin?

Seuraavassa lyhyesti mukaille saksalaisen liikuntakasvattajan ja tutkijan Renate Zimmerin näkemyksiä hänen kirjastaan Psykomotoriikan käsikirja - teoriaa ja käytäntöä lasten psykomotoriseen tukemiseen.

Liikuntavälineiden esim. vanteen käyttämisen kautta lapsi saa erilaisia aistikokemuksia, tutustuu mm. tilan hahmottamiseen, painovoimaan, tasapainoon.

p. s Suosittelen kaikkia Zimmerin kirjoja lasten kehityksestä kiinnostuneille.

Why is there a part in the toddlers´dance lesson with a of exercising/ sports equipment?

Renate Zimmer´s ( a German Child education researcher ) gives us aswers in her book Psykomotoriikan käsikirja - teoriaa ja käytäntöä lasten psykomotoriseen tukemiseen.  Here are some of her views in a nutshell:

By using different kinds of exercising equipment a child receives many kinds of  sensory perceptions, learns about spacial perception, gravity, balance etc.  A child explores and learns by  experimenting.  Using for example a hula -hoop a child is creative him or herself, instead that the teacher has created an excersise.  As for childrens´development it is important that he or she can act independently.  A child makes a realization "I can control this situation and I can change it" for example a child can go inside the hoop or stay out of it. A child has autonomy in his or her choises.

As a teacher I´ve experienced that children are really interested and happy about this indepent part of the lesson.  A child and an adult can act side by side instead of doing things together all the time.  Using different kinds of equipments is always at the end of the lesson because children grow tired.  After childrens´own exploring adults can offer ways to use hoops, build a tunnel for instance, but the most valuable part is the children´s own experimentig.

What may look just "fooling aroud with hoops" is actually a valuable part of the childrens´ dance experience from the pedagogic point of view.

p.s I recommend all the books by Ms Zimmer, if you are interested about childrens´development.

Ei tarpeeksi monta - Only few

Tanssi on luonteeltaan sosiaalista - kohdataan toisia, tanssitaan yhdessä! '

The time has flown recently, and I just noticed, that there are many readers who have visited the blog during these past two weeks... now the stories form the toddlers´ dance lessons continue....

Sometimes it happens that the size of toddlers dance class is only four to  six adult and child pairs, and sometimes there are just two participants.  These groups of just handful of adults and children usually are closed and the partisipants are advised to take part in the classes with more dancers, and that is the right thing to do.
If there are only, let´s say three adult and child pairs, it means that this kind of group has difficulties to become and functions as a group.  The children usually don´t learn from each other easily.  The circles and all kinds of formations are too small for the children to comprehend.  If someone becomes sick or is absent otherwise ( very common with the little ones and their families), the group keeps shrinking.  The dance room seems too large and spacious, the teacher can give too much attention to the dancers. There is no opportunity to make experiments on their own.

But if there are four to five active adult and child dancing pairs, the group might work just fine.  The noise level is low, children don´t bump into each other, the teacher has time for everyone, but there is possible to dance alone too.  The circle is big enough and there are enough children to make new friends.

Dance is social, let´s meet each other, let´s dance together!

Kuinka monta? How many?

Me opettajatkin mietimme tätä kysymystä paljon.

Seuraavassa blogissa sitten näkökulmia taaperotanssin pieniin ryhmiin....

How many toddlers can dance at the same dance lesson? This is something parents surely think, when they find out browsing the internet pages of a dance school´s schedules, that the group they were going to partcipate is full. Or that the other suitable group is not beginning due to the lack of participants.
How  many is too many or too few at the toddlers´dance lesson?

That is something we teachers also think a lot. If there are too many people attending the dance lesson, the children find the situtation difficult, there is just too many different people around.  Becoming a group is challenging, the children  can´t remember their dance friends, and it can be very uncomfortable to hold hands in a circle ( even in the spring time), or sitting close next to a dance friend.  The teacher doesn´t have time to give attention everyone sufficiently.  The teacher remains as a distant figure for the children through out the year.

The most difficult thing is the rise of sound level during the lesson.  Parents and children communicate and if there are too many voices the sound level just rises too much up.  This creates undesired stress for the children and for the adults. Even the teacher might  get edgy, if she has to raise her own voice giving directions or having to ask dancers to lower their speaking voices frequently.
It is suitable and appropriate that everyone is able to hear the music and even the words, for example in a childrens´song.  One is allowed to talk, cheer, laugh and giggle ( even yell) in the free-moving parts of the class.  Then there are moments when one is hoped to be very calm and even silent, for example if we lissten to the sounds in the music or relax..

The ideal size of a toddlers´s dance group is between 10-12, and even couple more, child- adult pairs, if the there is enough space. The groups works well even if some of the dancers are away sometimes.

In the next blog I´ll share my views about groups with only  few dancers...

Kesäinen kävely - Summer walk

Löysin tällaisen kesäisen kuvan, jonka nimi on" Summer walk", eli kesäinen kävely.

I found this picture called "the Summer walk".  These steady steps and finely waving hands ( helping balancing)  on the side brought all the dancing toddlers and their dancing back to my mind.

The ability to walk has certainly improved ( steady well balanced steps) among my last year´s little pupils, and most of them can most certainly run by now.  And some of my little students who danced in their parents` laps last spring can dance by their own feet this comign  autumn.

Summer is wonderful time for children ( and for their parents), not having to wear heavy boots.  One can move with light steps wearing only sandals or "running shoes" and even with bare feet.
Walking on bare feet gives children  many sensory perceptions and develops their balance.  Many children  also try to stand on the ball of his or hers foot by nature . It is useful for the children to walk on many different platforms or bases for example on the grass, on the sand, on the little rocks etc. as long as the enviroment is safe.  It would be nice to hear what kind of walking places you have found with your children during the summer?

There is still vacation left before the dance lessons begin -  I wish all the children and their parents  great walks!
