Lintuvilkutus - Bird wave

Aurinko paistaa ja päivät pitenevät. Tunneilla tanssitaan keväisten aiheiden mukaan.  Meillä on tanssitunnin alkulorussa osa, jossa jokainen lapsi saa vilkuttaa vuorollaan.  Olemme koko kevätkauden harjoitelleet ns. lintuvilkutusta, jossa lapsi laittaa kädet ristiin muodostaen "linnunsiivet" , joilla hän vilkuttaa muille lapsille.  Liikkeen tekeminen vaatii vartalon keskilinjan ylittämistä, eli aivopuoliskojen yhteistoimintaa.

Kuvat on otettu Ecuadorissa. Kiitos!

Days are full of sunlight and getting longer each day.  We dance spring dances in our lessons. We have a welcoming rhyme at the beginning of each class. The rhyme has a part where each child is given a chance to wave to other children and say hello.  During the spring term we`ve replaced our normal way of waving with a so called bird wave.  Children cross their arms in front of them forming " wings" and with these crossed hands they wave to each other.  Crossing hands requires ability to use both brain sides at the same time.  These so called crossing over ( the middle line) movements are not in any way goal movements for 1-3-years old children. Crossing over movements are very challenging even for older children . But when there is an adult guiding the child´s hand movements, children are able to do these crossing over movements.

During the last couple of weeks I´ve noticed that ( to my surprise ) even the younger children have started to find their bird wave hand position themselves. And how many variations of the bird waving hands  have we seen !
If the birds have their rich colours and personal voices in the nature, so can  dancers have as many personal ways of doing the same movement!
The pictures are photographed by a bird watcher and bird photographer Richard Paulson.
And how beautifully the wings of the humming bird are waving! The pictures are taken Ecuador . Thank you!

Jäähyväiset talvelle! Farewell to winter!

Talviaiheita on yleensä paljon., ainakin minun liikemateriaalissani.

Ylhäällä kuvassa on marsipaanista tehty lumiukko, jonka sain joululahjaksi eräältä pieneltä oppilaalta.  Onneksi on edes näitä makeita lumiukkoja!  Hyvältä maistui, kiitos!

The themes of the childrens´dance lessons go hand in hand with different seasons of year.  During fall we can dance lightly like leaves, during spring we can dance like animals on meadows, during easter time witches can fly etc.  Winter is usually very "rich " with different wintry dances.  We can create snowballs with our bodies, dance gliding dances like skaters, dance like skiers on parents feet, not to mention all different kinds of excercising equipment we can use.
Children usually enjoy winter time, and parents do all kinds of winter games with their children. The winter themes are usually very familiar to the children.

But this winter it has been challenging to do all the winter themed dances from previous years, because we hadn´t had any snow for the past past month.  I´ve been wondering if I still hold on to the idea of winter  existence  at least in dance lessons.  And yes, we danced winter songs, although the words hardly make any sense to the children.  The children have enjoyed the rhythm and moving.
Now at the beginning  of March we say farewell to winter themes and we move on and look towards
easter and spring.

At the picture there is a marzipan snowman given to me by a little dancer as a christmas gift.
Fortunately there are these sweet snowmen at least!  It was delicious! Thank you!

Miksi? Why?

Why should children move and dance? I What is it about dancing that is so useful and beneficial for children? Dance teachers usually see the joy of moving and other positive effects for children during dance classes, but just saying this is not convincing enough for parents and not even for us teachers, inclunding myself.  One needs recearch results to understand why.

There were three different articles related to this subject last January.  The articles can be found by opening the links above. I believe they are in English as well.  The most surprising research result, at least for me, was, that day care aged children are not moving enough during their regular days.
Another convincing result was that children do learn much more than just different movements and motor skills during dance or moving sessions.  They learn social skills and emotional skills as well.

I teach young children at the lessons in dance schools and at day care centers as well. All these research results confirm my own observations  during the dance lessons. Dance is moving, but it is also an art form. Emotions, self expression, being together with others are key ingredients in the  art of dance.  I have sometimes doubted, if it really is necessary to bring the young chidren to the dance lessons, wouldn´t every day activity be enough?
In the light of these research results I believe parents won´t have hard time motivating themselves to pack up the dance bags and bring children to move or to dance.  Not just for the sake of moving and learning motor skills, but to learn emotional skills and acting in a group enviroment.
I´m so grateful these academic studies were carried out.

Liikkeelle - Get moving!

Viime viikonloppuna olin kuuntelemassa Balettipedagogit ry.n  kaikille avointa paneelikeskustelua, jossa Kansallisbaletin johtaja Kenneth Greve esitteli Muuv-hankkeen, jonka tavoite on saada koko Suomi tanssimaan! Wau!
Muuv - sivulla on liikepankki, hankkeen lyhyt esittelyvideo, tanssin tekijöiden omia sivuja ja tulossa on kuulemma paljon muuta...

Kaikki tanssimaan  omalla tavallaan - ajattelu on todella virkistävää tanssin kentällä. Kaikki liike on arvokasta, kaikkien "muuvit" merkityksellisiä.

Last weekend I was lisstening the  open  panel discussion organized by  Balettipedagogit ry. The director of the Finnish National Ballet Mr. Kenneth Greve presented his Muuv - Project and the Project`s goal, no less than make all Finns dance! Wau!
The internet Muuv-page has so called movement bank, short introduction video of the Muuv -Project, short videos of the dance makers, and there  is lot more to come.... so I hear....
Get everybody dance -  type of thinking is refreshing in the field of dance.  Every kind of moving is valuable and everybody`s moves are significant.  I´ve been wondering   could it be possible to download some moves created by toddlers to the Movement-bank .  From time to time  I come across with the kind of thinking that that young childrens´dance is not real dancing and because it is not real dancing it is not so impoartant.  I believe every dancer counts and movements belong to us all.
And as Mr.Greve said in his video message " you might be surprised how moving makes you feel".
That great dance feeling also reaches the youngest dancers and the adults accompaning them.

Read more - the links above, and dance your "muuvs" at least at home!

Takaisin tunneille, osa 2. Back to the classes part 2.

Olen kirjoittanut alla olevan tekstin  jo muutamia vuosia sitten blogini alkutaipaleella.

I wrote this text below a few years ago, when I has just started writing this blog. At his time of year it feels like a current topic again.  I´ve gained so many experiences about my own teaching and meeting with various children and adults, that I would like to add some practical tips for the new comers. The tnew tips are marked with numbers.
The toddlers and adults have come  back to the dance classes.  Most of the participants are children who have started in autumn with me, but there are always new dancers at the begining of the year, and that is really nice!
Sometimes it is not easy to come to the group as a new beginner.  One can feel that other children can do so much, they know how the class goes, and are participating well.  One´s own child might just walk around and look  at the others, and is not willing to do anything with the group. Parents can wonder, why are we here? This is not working.

At this point I would advice, that please make the effort and come to the class three or four times, then  en one can see the real picture.  By then the  exercises have become familiar to the  child, as are the other members.  The child begins to remember the teacher and the activities he or she does with the teacher.  What at first might  seem as  uncertain wandering in the dance room, may  turn out to be structured toddler-adult dance pair dancing after the fourth class. Children  need time and repetition in order to learn new things, and so do we adults  if we´ll take on a new challenge.

1. Please be on time, but not too early, so that the child still has energy to dance. If she or he has to wait fot a long time before the class begins, she or he might use the energy and enthusiasm needed before hand.
2. Wear comfortable clothes so that you both are able to move on the floor as well in the overall space. We do carry the children from time to time. Adults might get warm themselves.
3. Let´s hold the children in a safe way. One can guide the child by holding their hands or fingers, but if one for examples lifts them, then let´s carry them under the arms.
4. It is most useful if the adult is following and dancing in the class actively. The children look their own parents closely and imitates them. The adults also learn the dances and  rhymes and can do them at home as well.
5. Please, let´s wash hands before and after class, this is the easy way not to catch nor to spread any bugs.

Welcome all the new dancers!

p.s if anyone likes to share their experiences about starting in a group, please send me  your story!

Uusi lukukausi - uudet tanssit New term - new dances

Uusi lukukausi on käynnistynyt, ja taaperoryhmiin on tullut uusia tanssijoita, tervetuloa!
Olemme tanssineet Jäniksellä pitkät korvat - laulun mukana mukavaa jänistanssia.  Jänistanssissa on hyödyllisiä kohtia esim. korvat ja koivet ristiin, jolloin lapset tekevät ns. keskilinjan ylityksen liikkeissään, mikä kehittää lapsen koordinaatiota aivopuoliskojen työskennellessä yhtä aikaa.

A new term has begun, and new dancers have become to the toddlers`dance groups, welcome !
We have been dancing a new rabbit dance, it is called The rabbit has long ears. The dance has some very challenging parts fofthe young dancers ,for example. when we cross our hands or feet children have to cross the center line and develop their coordination between right and left side of their bodies.  The levels up and down can be perceived in a ne way, because "the tail " is going up and dow.  The best part is that the song has very catchy melody and form. The 3 and 4 years old children like to dance this dance as well.
I made my own translation of the words for the non-Finnish speaking families, look down below.

The rabbit song can be found on cd in Finnish called Vauvojen  laulun aika By Eve Alho, Hilkka Hautsalo and  Soili Perkiö.

Jäniksellä pitkät korvat -pitkät korvat-pitkät korvat

Jäniksellä pitkät korvat -pitkät korvat on.
Korvat ristiin - korvat suoraan -korvat ristiin -korvat lurpalleen

Jäniksellä pitkät koivet-pitkät koivet-pitkät koivet
Jäniksellä pitkät koivet -pitkät koivet on
Koivet ristiin-koivet suoraan-koivet ristiin- koivet ristiin
kohti pilviä

Jäniksellä töpöhäntä - töpöhäntä -töpöhäntä
Jäniksellä töpöhäntä -töpöhäntä on
Häntä ylös-häntä alas - häntä ylös - häntä pörhölleen

Jänis loikki pellon poikki -pellon poikki -pellon poikki
Jänis loikki pellon poikki - piiloon luikki hui!

Rabbit has long ears -long ears -long ears
Rabbit has long ears - long ears indeed.
Crossed ears - straight ears -crossed ears and let them fall down.

Rabbit has long legs -long legs-long legs
Rabbit has long legs - long legs indeed.

Crossed legs - straight legs -crossed legs - up towards the clouds

Rabbit has tiny tail -tiny tail -tiny tail
Rabbit has tiny tail - rabbit has tiny tail indeed.

Tail up- tail down -tail up - fluff the tail
Rabbit jumps over the field - over the filed- over the field
Rabbit jumps over the field - and hides, wow!

Hyvää Joulua! Merry Christmas!

The fall term in the dance schools is beginning to end.  Last week we had many christmas dances at the dance lessons with my toddler dance groups and with the 3-4-years old little dancers. It was wonderful that so many family members and other quests had time to participate  in  our special christmas dance lessons.
There were entire families dancing and rejoicing together.

The 3-4 years old children performed in front of their parents and other quests. The little snow elves charmed with their glittering little capes.  The children have learnt a great deal during this past months.  Children find the dance lesson situation familiar, they know the names of the other children in their groups and they say their own names outloud at the beginng of each lesson.  Children are eager to  share things to me as well.
They can do many different dance exercises executing different ways of moving and perceiving the space more easily for example staying in line and not jumping into each other...we´ve also begun the first couple exercises, little elves rolled on the floor holding hands with each other.

I thank you for all the presents and flowers I received, and wish you all very merry christmas!
Let´s sing and dance and wish that the magic tricks of the little dancing elves bring snow finally on the ground!

New dancers are able to enroll to the classes after christmas.  I received a permission to advertise my own class which are available to new dancers. Look up for the schedules and browse through internet pages of these two dance schools to find information in English.
