Ujostuttaa... Little shy...

Lapsia saattaa ujostuttaa  ensimmäisillä tanssitunneilla.  Erityisesti 1-2-vuotiaiden tunnilla lapset saattavat kokea opettajan ja muut osallistujat ihan piinallisen vieraina. Lpset käpertyvät aidin syliin tai jalkojen taaksen, eivätkä millään uskalla tulla kuorestaan ulos.  Vanhempia tämä saattaa hämmentää ja jopa ärsyttää.  Mutta kannattaa ajatella, että lapsi osoittaa vierastamalla, että hän on turvallisessa kiintymyssuhteessa, ja että hän kyllä tuntee kuka on tuttu ja turvallinen ja kuka uusi ja vähän pelottava.   

Alussa en edes katso lapsia pitkään silmiin, kun näen, että he vierastavat minua.  Pikku hiljaa ajan kanssa lapset alkavat tuntea tanssituntinsa ryhmän tuttuna ja turvallisena. Tämän vuoksi käyn tunnin rentoutusvaiheessa aina vähän silittämässä lapsia varovasti heidän luvallaan, ja jos lapsi ei halua minua lähelleen niin häntä on kunnioitettava toiveessaan.
Usein lapsi saattaa myös aluksi luulla, että olen vaikkapa hoitaja, ja että oma vanhempi lähtee pois kun tulen paikalle.  Ajan kanssa lapset tottuvat, että oma aikuinen ei lähdekään vaikka se opettaja tulee lähelle.  Meillä on aikaa tutustua - niinkuin laulussa sanotaan "Ei ole kiire, ei ole kiire, jokainen päivä on uusi aarre".  Sitä on meidän aikuistenkin hyvä rallatella!

Children can be shy during the first dance lessons. Especially the one and two years old children can feel stress around the teacher and other new dancers. The children crawl into their parents laps or hide behind the legs. The parents can find this confusing and even  a little bit irritating.  But it is worthwhile to think that if the children act in a shy way the jut express that they have conformed a secure relationship with their mothers or fathers, and that they do know who is a stranger to them and who do they know.

At the beginning of our classes I don´t even look at the children directly if I see they seem to be afraid of me.  As the time goes by the children begin to find the  dance lesson situation familiar and safe.  I visit each  child at the end of our lessons while they practise relaxation and give him or her a gentle stroke with his or her permission. The wishes of a child must be respected as for getting close to them and I always do that, wait for their signal that I´m allowed to to stroke their feet for example.

We have time to get to know each other - as it says in
a song "there is no hurry, there is no hurry, each day is a treasure". We adults can sing this as well!

Uusi lukukausi - A new term

Taaperotanssitunnit ovat jälleen alkaneet vauhdikkaasti.  Olen ilolla huomannut kuinka 1-3-vuotaiden tanssitunnit ovat lisääntyneet monissa tanssikouluissa - myös tanssikouluissa joissa itse opetan.  Kun lapsia on tulossa paljon tunneille,niin on ollut mahdollista laittaa pienet tanssijat kahteen eri ikäryhmään eli 1-2-vuotiaat samaan ja 2-3-vuotiaat samaan ryhmään.  Tämä jako on käytössä monissa tanssikouluissa meillä ja maailmalla.  On mielenkiintoista seurata miten nämä ryhmät toimivat vuoden aikana ja miten opetukseni kehittyy.  On hyvä muistaa, että 1-3-vuotiaat voivat tanssia samassakin ryhmässä hienosti.  Isommat voivat olla ylpeitä osaamisestaan ja pienemmillä on ympärillään enemmän malleja. ks.aikaisempi blogi arkistosta Isot ja pienet yhdessä.  Arkistosta löytyy myös takaisin tanssitunneille,jossa käydään läpi aloittamisen haasteita.

The dance lessons for toddlers have begun again. I´ve noticed with joy that there more and more opportunities for children age 1-3 to dance in different dance schools - also in the schools where I teach.  When there are plenty of children coming to dance it makes it possible for divide them into two diffrent age groups, 1-2 years old in one group and 2-3 years old in another group.  This division is much used in dance schools here and abroad. It is very intriguing for me to follow these two different age groups how they work in the near future and how my own teaching develops with these different groups. 
It is helpful to remember that children age -.3 years old can dance in the same group though. The older ones can be proud of their own abilities and the younger ones have more skillful litte dancers  to observe and learn from. kiirettä... näytöksiä...busy... performances...

En ole ehtinyt kirjoittaa blogiani pitkään aikaan, ja se johtuu tästä vuodenajasta, jolloin kaikki tanssikoulut valmistautuvat kevätnäytöksiin.  Niin teemme mekin taaperoiden kanssa. Tänä vuonna näyttämölle on menossa esitys nimeltä Helinät ja Peter Panit, jossa tanssivat pienet ihanat tytöt ja pojat aikuisiensa kanssa. Esityksen musiikki on Manicinin Ballerina´s dream, ja se sopii oikein hyvin tähän kauniiseen tanssiin.

Tytöillä on siivet selässään ja mekot ja pojilla vihreät paidat ( Panin hattua he eivät oikein tykääneet pitää).
Sain tämän  tanssin idean Barryn kirjan sanoista, jotka jäivät mieleeni heti ensimmäisellä lukukerralla
"Kun ensimmäinen vauva nauroi ensimmäisen kerran, se nauru hajosi tuhansiksi palasiksi ja ne kimpoilivat ympäriinsä - niin saivat keijut alkunsa".

Tänä vuonna erikoista on myös se, että "joudun itse lavalle". Molemmissa ryhmissäni on sisarus, joka tulee myös näyttämölle, minun parikseni. Hienoa päästä kokemaan esitys aikuisen näkökulmasta.

I haven´t had time to write this blog for a long time and it due to this time of the year; every dance school is getting ready for the spring performances.  So do we, the toddler dancers and I.  This year my groups are going to perform a dance called "The Tinker Bells and the Peter Pans".  Little girls and boys are going to be on stage wtih their parents.  The music is by Manicini called the Ballerina´s Dream and it suits well to this beautiful dance.

 The costumes are wings and dresses and the boys wear green ( wearing a hat was very uncomfortable for the boys).  
I got the idea for the dance form the words of the Peter Pan book by Barry.  
"When the first baby laughed for the first time, its laugh broke into a thousand pieces, and they all went skipping about, and that was the beginning of fairies."
These words have been in my mind ever since I read the book for the first time.

One special thig with the performance this year is that I ´m going to be on stage.  There is a sister in both of my groups who needs an adult to accompany her on stage with her.  It is really interesting and wonderful to be able to experience a performance from the point af view of an adult who is accompanying a child through a performance.

Kirjasta ...about a book...

Jonkin aikaa sitten kerroin aikovani lukea tämän uutuuskirjan (julkaistu 2012).  Nyt se on tehty, ja suosittelen sitä kaikille vanhemmille ja kasvattajille luettavaksi.  Todella mielenkiintoinen ja ajatuksia herättävä.. Kirja käsittelee pääosin alle 3-vuotiaiden päivähoitoa, mutta kyllä sieltä löytyy faktaa ja näkemyksiä myös taaperotanssin tapaisista 1-3-vuotiaiden harrastuksista  ja niiden vaikutuksesta lasten sosiaalisuuteen, mitkä kiinnostivat minua taidekasvattajana eniten. Tässä suora lainaus sivulta 216:

"Vuoden vanha näkee mielellään muita lapsia, vaikka ei kovin kauan jaksakaan leikkiä heidän kanssaan.Kaksivuotias on mielellään muutaman kerran viikossa ohjtussa ryhmässä, tunnin pari kerrallaan. Kolmevuotias kykenee 3-4 tunnin ohjattuun ryhmätoimintaan useamman kerran viikossa."
 Vasta 3-vuotiaan kohdalla psykologian professori Keltikangas- Järvisen mukaan on"ryhmäkokemuksista selvää hyötyä, sitä nuorempien hyötymisestä ei tiedetä, mutta useimmista lapsista toiminta on hauskaa, eikä siitä ainakaan haittaa ole."

Oman kokemukseni mukaan juuri näin onkin tanssikasvatuksessa.  Vasta 3-vuotiaat omana ryhmänään, ja sitä pienemmät aikuisen kanssa tutustumassa ryhmätilanteeseen, ja aikuinen-lapsitunneilla käydään jos ja kun siitä on iloa sekä lapselle että aikuiselle.

Olisi kiva kuulla mielipiteitänne, jos tämä bestseller on sattunut lukemiseksenne?

Sometime ago I mentioned that I was going to read the book above.  It is about the social development of children under school age.  I truly recommend this ( but I don´t know if it has been translated yet to another language).  The book is mostly about day care on children under 4 years old, but it has interesting knowledge about the hobbies and their effects to very young children . Here is a quote ( the bloggers own translation ) page 216:
"A one year old child is happy to meet other children, although she or he likes to play only little time with
others.  Two years olds like to go to a group with an instructor once or twice a week an hour or two at a time.  Three years old children are able to participate in a group with instructors several times a week three or four hours at a time."
According to the professor of physology Keltikangas-Järvinen". Being in a  group is clearly positive thing for children who are three years old or older.   There is no knowledge about the beneficial factors with children under three years, but there is no certainly harm to them".

According to my own experiences this is just the same with dance lessons -  Three years old children come without their parents and children under three years come with their own adults  to learn how to be  part of a group.  And everybody keep coming as lons as the children and the adults enjoy the dance lessons.

 Tämä on julkaistu youtuben sivustolla viime joulukuussa ja se on kerännyt tuhansia katsojia:  Tässä tanssii 14 kuukautta vanha Ivo tanssijavanhempiensa kanssa.  Ihmiset ovat kommentoineet laidasta laitaan: jotkut ovat ihastuneet ja jotkut ovat vihastuneet. Meille taaperotanssijoille tässä ei ole mitään ihmeellistä, me teemme tämän tapaista ihan joka tunti, lapset matkivat aikuisia ja aikuiset lapsia - vuorovaikutusta tanssien!

This was published  via youtube last December and it has had thousands of viewers ever since:  A little boy called Ivo, age 14 months dances here with his dancer father and ( dancer mother). People have made comments strongly: some have truly liked and some disliked. For us, dancing with toddlers - people, there is nothing new about this video, we do this every week; children imitate the movements of adults and adults imitates the movements of the children - communicating by dancing!

musiikki juhlii - music celebrates!

    Osallistuin Espoon musiikkiopiston 50-vuotisjuhliin menneellä viikolla, ja mikä ihan yllätys olikaan tämän upean ja arvokkaan juhlan ohjelmassa:  Toisena esiintyivät EMOn vauvamuskarilaiset ( opettaja Ulla Piispanen) Emil Hellströmin polkan tahdissa elävän musiikin säestyksellä.  Aikuisilla oli mustat asu ja vauvoilla valkoista ja raikkaat siniset huivit kaulassaan.  Vauvat olivat alle 1-vuotiaita. 
Miten upeaa, että musiikin puolella varhaisikasvatustyö nähdään niin arvokkaana ja luonnollisena osana kokonaisvaltaista musiikkikasvatusta, että juhlakonsertiinkin tullaan esiintymään.  Tuntuu, että tähän on suomalaisen tanssikasvatuksen piirissä vielä matkaa, että nähtäisiin se aivan alkuopetus tärkeänä

Kiitos ihanasta esityksestä ja esimerkistä!  ( juhlista ei vielä ole löytynyt julkaistuja kuvia, mutta odotetellaan... tämä kuva oli ohjelman kannessa, se kuvaa espoon musiikkiopiston toimintaa).

I participated in the 50th anniversary concert of the Espoo music school last week.  There was a wonderful surprise hidden in the concert programm:  Second to perform was the" baby music group" ( teacher Ulla Piispanen).  They performed a polka by Emil Hellström accompanied by live music.  The adults wore black outfits, the babies had all white and bright blue scarves around their necks. The babies were under 1-year olds.  It is really marvellous that the early music education is concidered to be so valuable and such a natural part of the over all music education that a baby group is invited to perform in this dignified anniversary concert.
I ´m afraid that people in the field of  dance education don´t think this way yet in Finland.

Thank you for a wonderful performance and setting an example! ( I have not yet found any pictures released form the consert, I´m waiting.... this picture was on the cover of the concert programm, it describes the  musical paths/ action plan in the Espoo music school).
