Joulun kaikuja - Echoes from christmas

Joulun aikaan kirjoitin Tonttujen jouluyö-tanssista, jota tanssimme taaperoiden tanssitunnilla ( löytyy aikaisemmista kirjoituksista).

Annetaan   lapsille aikaa oppia!

p.s Eetun äiti antoi minulle luvan kertoa tämän tarinan, lapsen nimi vaihdettu.

During christmas time I wrote about the song " the Christmas night of the elves" that we danced  with the toddlers (can be found in the archives).  One important part of the song and dance was practising motor skills of the fingers.  When we sang tip-tap, we raised our index fingers up.  After the christmas one mother told me:

" When we did the song and dance, I thought that this is difficult for my son, Eetu, almost too difficult... but guess what is happening now in the evenings, when he should be lying down getting ready to sleep?
He sits on his bed his index fingers high up singing tip-tap, so instead of singing lullabies, we sing " the christmas night of the elfs " and especially the part of tip-tap..."  Eetu´s mother seemed glad about this development, and I believe Eetu is also glad, not to mention the teacher.

Children learn and get enthusiastic in their own rhytm, christmas is long gone, but the song is still here with it´s finger dance.  Let´s give time for children to learn!

p.s Eetu´s mother gave me a permission to share this story, I changed the child´s name though.

Lumipallo - Snowball

mielikuvasta.... - from an image to ...

                                                       liikkeeksi - a movement

Alle 4-vuotiaiden tunnilla yksinkertaiset mielikuvat riittävät, eikä pitkää tarinaa tarvita vielä.
Yksi lumipallo -  monta monta liikettä!

Winter is here at last changing everything white, and many winter activities are forming a theme in the toddler´s dance class.  In the class children learn about the basic elements in dance.  One of the elements is shape ( body shape and creating shapes in space).  We have explored the round shape.  We have formed big circles and small circles, created round shapes with our arms and legs.  We have tried to be  little and ball-like with our bodies, practised rolling as a snowball.  A snowball has beem an image that has been used during the lesson.  2-3years old children enjoy using images and 1-year old children learn about similarities of a round shape and a snowball little by little.

Little bags of peas have acted as snowballs that children have used to practise throwing " with all my strength - forward"  and later on backward also .
Simple images are sufficient with dancers under 4-years of age, long stories are not needed yet.
One snowball - many many movements!

Takaisin tunneille osa .2 Back to classes part. 2

Olen kirjoittanut alla olevan tekstin  jo muutamia vuosia sitten blogini alkutaipaleella.

I wrote this text below a few years ago, when I has just started writing this blog. At his time of year it feels like a current topic again.  I´ve gained so many experiences about my own teaching and meeting with various children and adults, that I would like to add some practical tips for the new comers. The tnew tips are marked with numbers.
The toddlers and adults have come  back to the dance classes.  Most of the participants are children who have started in autumn with me, but there are always new dancers at the begining of the year, and that is really nice!
Sometimes it is not easy to come to the group as a new beginner.  One can feel that other children can do so much, they know how the class goes, and are participating well.  One´s own child might just walk around and look  at the others, and is not willing to do anything with the group. Parents can wonder, why are we here? This is not working.

At this point I would advice, that please make the effort and come to the class three or four times, then  en one can see the real picture.  By then the  exercises have become familiar to the  child, as are the other members.  The child begins to remember the teacher and the activities he or she does with the teacher.  What at first might  seem as  uncertain wandering in the dance room, may  turn out to be structured toddler-adult dance pair dancing after the fourth class. Children  need time and repetition in order to learn new things, and so do we adults  if we´ll take on a new challenge.

1. Please be on time, but not too early, so that the child still has energy to dance. If she or he has to wait fot a long time before the class begins, she or he might use the energy and enthusiasm needed before hand.
2. Wear comfortable clothes so that you both are able to move on the floor as well in the overall space. We do carry the children from time to time. Adults might get warm themselves.
3. Let´s hold the children in a safe way. One can guide the child by holding their hands or fingers, but if one for examples lifts them, then let´s carry them under the arms.
4. It is most useful if the adult is following and dancing in the class actively. The children look their own parents closely and imitates them. The adults also learn the dances and  rhymes and can do them at home as well.
5. Please, let´s wash hands before and after class, this is the easy way not to catch nor to spread any bugs.

Welcome all the new dancers!

p.s if anyone likes to share their experiences about starting in a group, please send me  your story!

musiikkiin.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZYARdjumZ4

Passing on our folklore traditions is a part of children´s early art education, also in dance.  Christmas offers many oppurtunities to do that. Every year we dance and sing the traditonal "  the Christmas night of the elfs" in the dance class.

The first time we dance and play this, young children usually look at us adults with amazament as if they were asking us " what in the world are you doing?" .  There is a very good reason for children´s confusion, all of a sudden adults hold their index fingers up singin "tip-tap", not to mention the part " eat and drink" in the song, and we adults play eating.

3-year old dancers usually get the idea of the song right away, because he or she can play and dance all the verses of the song - he or she can combine imagining and action, but 1- year olds look sceptical...

But we go on and sing and dance this elf-song every time and then on the third or on the fourth time even the smallest are getting the idea and having fun; fingers are getting up and smiles can be spotted.

"the Christmas night of the elfs" is a part of  the Finnish chritmas traditions but it is also a good way to to teach motor coordination, isolation of the fingers. One can also teach how to make big circles and small circles and blowing for example " when the lights go out".  This very old song is full of pedagogical oppurtunities and  most importantly - children and adults can dance and have fun together.

Merry christmas and " dance under the christmas tree"

kuperkeikka -somersault

Nyt kuitenkin eräs toinen kollegani opetti minua opettamaan kuperkeikan, ja kappas, hänen ohjeillaan kaikki onnistuivat, niin lapset kuin aikuisetkin. Eli;

"Children love to spin and whirl around and somersault" said one dance teacher to me a long time ago.But I have always been litte worried as for teaching somersaults to very young children. I ´ve felt that their movements  can easily become  uncontrolled.

Now on of my other fellow dance teacher taught me how to teach a somersault and, to my surprise, wih her instructions every one succeeded, the children and the adults, so here are the directions:

1.  the child puts his or her head to the ground between his or her hands.
2.  the adult puts his or her hands to the child´s pelvis and takes the weight of the pelvis to his or her own hands, and then helps the child to do a somersault
3.  the adult watches that the child keeps his or her chin against his or her chest, and the adult has ability to alter the direction of the movement at all time
4. after the somersault, the child is praized

The most important piece of direction is still missing ( perhaps the most demanding) - First the teacher shows an example and does a somersault  herself!

Have happy experiments with somersaults, but please be careful though!

lisää mielipiteitä...more opinions...

kuva:windynookprimary.org

Kuuntele koko haastatteluhttp://areena.yle.fi/audio/1321966982268

Discussion about the quality of day care continues - this time Marjatta Kalliala (Helsinki University )shared her  opinion that nowdays parents take their children to different hobbies after the day care day, because their children are not given the education for example in arts and sports, parents would like their children to have.  Lissten to the interview http://areena.yle.fi/audio/1321966982268

This opinion woke me up to think about my own toddler´s dance groups.  It it true that some of the parents come first to my dance class together and then take their child to the day care and go to work themselves.
I ´m glad that the dance class is considered important in those families where the childten are not in spendin their days at home any more.

But wouldn´t it be wonderful, if we the art teachers could be a more permanent part of the every day activities in the day care services?  I´m aware that some dance schools co-operate with day care for example in Vantaa, that is already happening.  But more could be done in general.. What would be the solution, that the day care services and art educators could find each other better?

One thing is sure; we, the teachers in art education must keep the quality of our teaching  high in every class. As Ms Kalliala said: "in early education the quality must be earned every day"
Enjoy the work everyone!
